Orbit Garant Drilling specializes in diamond drilling for underground and surface mining exploration. Diamond core drilling utilizes an annular drill bit with an industrial-grade diamond crown to cut a cylindrical core from solid rock. This core sample is extracted and analyzed to provide the mine operator with information about the mineral deposit. Diamond drilling is required at each stage of mining operations: exploration, development and production. The company has experience performing diamond core drilling in holes as deep as 2,500 metres. In April of 2007, Orbit Garant acquired Drift Exploration Drilling, expanding the company’s geographic reach to Nevada, USA and Mexico, and enabling Orbit Garant to offer its clients reverse-circulation drilling services in addition to diamond drilling. Reverse-circulation or RC drilling is primarily used during the exploration stage of mining in reasonably shallow holes (i.e., less than 600 metres) when the ground or drilling conditions cannot support the fluids necessary for diamond drilling. Instead of producing a solid core as in diamond drilling, RC drilling uses a rotary air blasting system to produce a sample composed of rock chips.
